Text to Speech — Free Online Reader
Read text aloud with your browser's voices, with speed and pitch controls
Runs in your browser · nothing is uploaded
Speed, pitch and volume apply the next time you press Read aloud.
Voices come from your operating system and browser. Saving the speech as an audio file is not possible with the Web Speech API, so there is no download.
What it is
Text to Speech reads whatever you type out loud using the voices built into your browser. Use it to hear how a speech or script sounds, to proofread a long text by ear, or to listen to the pronunciation of a sentence in another language. The sentence being read is highlighted on screen, and the voice list shows voices in your page language first. The audio is produced by your own browser.
How to use
- Type or paste the text into the box. The limit is 20,000 characters.
- Choose a voice. The first group lists voices matching the page language. If you do not choose one, the browser default voice is used.
- Adjust speed, pitch and volume. Speed runs from 0.5x to 2x and pitch from 0 to 2. Changes apply from the next sentence.
- Press Read aloud. The text is spoken sentence by sentence, the current sentence is highlighted, and if your browser reports word boundaries the current word is marked too.
- Pause holds your place, Resume continues, and Stop ends the reading.
How it works
- Speech engine: the browser’s Web Speech API (speechSynthesis). No extra program or server is involved on this site.
- Voice list: it shows exactly what your operating system and browser report. Voices that match the page language come first and the rest are grouped by language. If the list is empty, the browser may still be loading it, so the page checks again for several seconds.
- Online voices: voices that the browser reports as not local get an online label. Depending on the browser, these may be synthesized on the browser vendor’s servers.
- Sentence splitting: text is split with Unicode sentence boundary rules (Intl.Segmenter). A sentence longer than 220 characters is split again at a comma or space.
- Time estimate: about 5 characters per second for Korean, Chinese and Japanese and about 15 characters per second for other scripts. It is a rough guess, and real voices differ.
- No download: the Web Speech API cannot export audio, so there is no MP3 or WAV saving.
Examples
| Input | How it is read |
|---|---|
| Hello. Nice to meet you! | split into two sentences and read in turn |
| It costs 3.5 dollars. Really? | the decimal point is not treated as a sentence end |
| 안녕하세요. 반갑습니다. | choose a Korean voice for correct pronunciation |
| 今日は晴れです。 | choose a Japanese voice to hear Japanese pronunciation |
The same text can sound different with each voice, especially numbers and symbols. If something is read oddly, spelling it out in words usually fixes it.
FAQ
Why is my voice list empty or missing my language?
The voices come from your operating system and browser, not from this site. Some browsers fill the list a few seconds after the page opens, so wait a moment. If your language is still missing, add a voice pack in the speech or language settings of Windows, macOS, Android or iOS and reload the page.
Is my text sent to a server?
This site never receives your text. Depending on the browser, however, voices labeled online may go through the browser vendor's servers to produce the audio. If you want your text to stay on the device, choose a voice without the online label.
Can I save the speech as an MP3?
No. The Web Speech API only plays audio. It gives pages no way to capture or export it, so this tool cannot offer a download. If you need a file you would have to record your computer's sound output yourself, and you should check the voice vendor's terms first.
Why does it stop in the middle of a long text?
Some speech engines give up on very long utterances. To avoid that, the tool splits your text into sentences and queues them one by one, and it splits an extremely long sentence again at a comma or space. If it still stops, press Stop and then Read aloud again.
Pause does not work on my phone.
Some mobile browsers handle pause and resume poorly, and pause can behave like stop. In that case stop and start again from the beginning.
