PNG to WebP Converter — Smaller Web Images

Browser-based PNG to WebP converter that keeps transparency and reduces file size

Runs in your browser · nothing is uploaded

Drop PNG files here

Convert up to 50 PNG files at once to WebP, up to 50 MB each. You can also choose files or paste a copied image with Ctrl+V (⌘V on Mac). Files never leave your browser.

Conversion settings

Keeps transparency while shrinking the file. Lowering the quality makes the compression lossy, so use 90 or higher for crisp shapes and text.

Higher is sharper and larger. At 90 the difference is usually hard to see.

Image size

EXIF data (camera, time, GPS location) is not carried over to the converted file. The photo orientation is applied.

Why convert PNG to WebP

PNG supports transparency, but images that contain photos get large, which makes them heavy for banners and product shots on a web page. WebP keeps transparency and can be much smaller than PNG, so it is a popular choice for lightening images on a website or blog. The conversion runs in your browser, so images are not uploaded, and you can process up to 50 files and download a ZIP.

How to use

  1. Add your PNG files by dropping them on the dashed area or with Choose PNG files.
  2. Set the WebP quality. The default 90 favors sharpness, and for photo-heavy images about 80 is often fine.
  3. If needed, use Limit long edge to reduce the resolution as well.
  4. Use the card button for single files or the ZIP button for the whole batch. Example: banner.png becomes banner.webp.

How it works

  • Transparency kept: the alpha channel is passed through, including semi-transparent edges and shadows.
  • Lossy compression: the quality slider (10 to 100) trades size against sharpness.
  • Encoder check: in a browser that cannot save WebP, a notice appears at the top and the drop zone is disabled.
  • Animated PNG (APNG): only the first frame is converted.
  • Metadata: not carried over.

To turn WebP back into PNG use WebP to PNG, and for photos without transparency also look at JPG to WebP or PNG to JPG.

FAQ

Is the PNG's transparent background kept in WebP?

Yes. WebP supports an alpha channel, so transparent areas stay transparent instead of being filled with white like they would be in a JPG.

How much smaller will it be?

PNGs with photos or gradients often shrink a lot, while simple artwork with a handful of colors is already small as PNG and may change little. Check the before and after sizes on each card. The same quality number does not mean pixel-identical results to the PNG.

Will text and logos get blurry?

The output is lossy WebP, so a low quality can leave faint halos around text and lines. Use 90 or more when crisp shapes matter, and keep the PNG if you need exactly identical pixels.

The page says my browser cannot save WebP.

Safari can display WebP but cannot encode it, on the Mac as well, and on iPhone and iPad the Chrome and Firefox apps use the same engine (WebKit), so they cannot save WebP either. Open the page in Chrome, Edge or Firefox on a computer or an Android phone. The check runs once when the page loads and the result is shown up front.

A site will not accept my WebP.

Some upload forms do not take WebP. Convert it back with WebP to PNG or WebP to JPG and submit that instead.
