JPG to PNG Converter — Lossless Copies

Browser-based JPG to PNG converter for PNG-only uploads and lossless editing copies

Runs in your browser · nothing is uploaded

Drop JPG files here

Convert up to 50 JPG files at once to PNG, up to 50 MB each. You can also choose files or paste a copied image with Ctrl+V (⌘V on Mac). Files never leave your browser.

Conversion settings

Saving a JPG as PNG does not bring back detail the JPG already lost, and the file usually grows. Use it when you need a lossless working copy or a site only accepts PNG.

PNG is saved losslessly, with no quality loss. The file can be larger than a JPG.

Image size

EXIF data (camera, time, GPS location) is not carried over to the converted file. The photo orientation is applied.

Why convert JPG to PNG, and its limits

JPG and PNG serve different purposes. JPG is a lossy format that makes photos small, while PNG is lossless and keeps pixels as they are. Saving a JPG as PNG will not revive detail that was already thrown away, but it does stop any further loss from that point on. That helps when a picture goes through several edits, or when an upload rule demands PNG. The conversion runs in your browser, so the photo is never uploaded, and you can process up to 50 files and download a ZIP.

How to use

  1. Drop JPG or JPEG files on the dashed area or press Choose JPG files.
  2. The default is lossless PNG output. If an upload limit forces a smaller file, tick Shrink PNG size (256 colors).
  3. To lower the resolution too, choose Limit long edge and enter a pixel value. Images are never enlarged.
  4. Press Download on a card, or Download all (ZIP) to get everything at once. Example: profile.jpeg becomes profile.png.

How it is saved

  • Lossless: the decoded pixels of the JPG go into the PNG unchanged.
  • Size: photos commonly grow several times over. Each card shows the before and after size.
  • Transparency: JPG has none, so the result is opaque.
  • Color reduction (optional): when on, the image is quantized to at most 256 colors to cut the size.
  • Metadata: EXIF and GPS are not carried over; the rotation is applied.

To shrink a PNG into JPG use PNG to JPG, and for a smaller web file use JPG to WebP. For iPhone photos start with the HEIC to JPG converter.

FAQ

Does converting JPG to PNG improve quality?

No. Detail that JPG already discarded does not come back when you save as PNG. PNG only preserves the picture as it looks now, without further loss, and the file is usually much larger. If you want better quality, find a better original instead.

Then why convert at all?

Two common reasons. A site or document tool accepts only PNG, or you want a working copy that does not lose more quality every time you edit and save. For plain storage or sharing, keeping the JPG is more efficient.

Will the background become transparent?

No. JPG carries no transparency information, so the PNG is fully opaque. Making a background transparent takes a separate background-removal step.

The PNG came out huge. What can I do?

Turn on Shrink PNG size (256 colors). It reduces the image to 256 colors, which can band smooth gradients in photos, so it is off by default. Combining it with Limit long edge makes the file smaller still.

Is the camera information kept?

No. EXIF such as camera model, time and GPS location is not carried over, though the rotation is applied so the picture does not turn sideways.
