HEIC to PNG Converter — Lossless from iPhone

Browser tool that converts HEIC photos to lossless PNG for editing and design work

Runs in your browser · nothing is uploaded

Drop HEIC files here

Convert up to 50 HEIC files at once to PNG, up to 50 MB each. You can also choose files or paste a copied image with Ctrl+V (⌘V on Mac). Files never leave your browser.

Conversion settings

Converting HEIC to PNG loses no quality, but the file ends up much larger than a JPG. For ordinary photos JPG is often the better fit. Live Photos become a single still.

PNG is saved losslessly, with no quality loss. The file can be larger than a JPG.

Image size

EXIF data (camera, time, GPS location) is not carried over to the converted file. The photo orientation is applied.

When PNG is the right target

If you plan to retouch a HEIC photo several times in an image editor or a design tool, a PNG copy is a safe base. JPG loses a little more quality on every save, while PNG keeps the same pixels, so repeated edit-and-save cycles do not pile up artifacts. PNG is also useful when a form or document tool accepts only PNG. If your goal is simply to send a photo by chat or email, JPG is much smaller and the better choice. All processing happens in your browser, so the photos never leave your device.

How to use

  1. Drop HEIC or HEIF files on the dashed area or press Choose HEIC files. You can add 50 files at a time, up to 50 MB each.
  2. The default is fully lossless output. If size is a concern, tick Shrink PNG size (256 colors).
  3. To reduce the resolution as well, pick Limit long edge and enter a pixel value.
  4. Download with the card buttons. Names change from IMG_2041.HEIC to IMG_2041.png.

How it is saved

  • Lossless: the decoded pixels go into the PNG unchanged. With the size kept, the pixel dimensions equal the original.
  • Color reduction (optional): when enabled, the image is quantized to a palette of at most 256 colors with UPNG. Photos can show visible changes.
  • Rotation: the stored orientation of the photo is applied.
  • Not included: EXIF, GPS, Portrait depth maps and the video of Live Photos.

Unless you are retouching, the HEIC to JPG converter is usually the lighter option. HEIC decoding uses the heic-to library built on libheif (LGPL-3.0), downloaded separately and only on the HEIC pages. The full license texts are on the Open-source licenses page.

FAQ

How much bigger will the PNG be?

A lot bigger. PNG does not throw detail away, so a photo often ends up several times the size of the HEIC and far larger than a JPG. The exact ratio depends on the picture, so check the before and after sizes shown on each card.

Does PNG give better quality than the original HEIC?

It adds no further loss, but it cannot improve the original. HEIC is already lossy, so the PNG simply preserves that state. The benefit is that you can edit and save many times without losing more quality.

Can I make the PNG smaller?

Turn on Shrink PNG size and the image is reduced to 256 colors. The file gets much smaller, but smooth gradients such as skies can show banding, which is why it is off by default. For ordinary sharing the HEIC to JPG page is a better fit.

Will the background become transparent?

No. Photos have no transparent area to begin with, so the PNG is fully opaque. Removing a background needs a separate background-removal tool.

Is the Portrait mode depth data kept?

No. Only the pixels of the primary image are saved. Depth maps, the video part of Live Photos and EXIF location data are not included.
