Turns AVIF images saved from the web into JPG files that open anywhere. Pick PNG to keep transparent areas. If your browser cannot open AVIF itself, a built-in decoder (about 1.2 MB) is downloaded to read it.

Higher is sharper and larger.

Transparent areas are filled with this color. JPG and BMP cannot store transparency, so they are always filled.

Image size

EXIF data (camera, time, GPS location) is not carried over; the photo orientation is applied. Files never leave your browser.

What it is

A converter from AVIF to JPG or PNG. Many websites now send photos as AVIF to save bandwidth, so an image you save may end up as a .avif file. Because the format only became a standard in 2019, older programs and upload forms often refuse it. Convert it to JPG here and use it in chat apps, documents and photo apps without trouble.

How to use

  1. Drop AVIF files on the dashed area or click Choose AVIF files. Up to 50 at once.
  2. Under Convert to, pick JPG or PNG.
  3. For JPG, set the quality and the background color for transparent areas. You can also limit the long edge.
  4. Download each file, or use Download all (ZIP).

How it works

  • Detection: the ftyp box at the start of the file must carry the avif or avis brand. HEIC photos use the same container; they are recognised and pointed to the HEIC converter.
  • Decoding: the browser’s own AVIF decoder first, then the libavif decoder compiled to WebAssembly if the browser cannot open it.
  • JPG output: quality 90 by default. JPG has no transparency, so transparent areas get the background color.
  • PNG output: lossless, with transparency kept or filled.
  • Animated AVIF: only the first frame of an image sequence (avis) is converted.
  • File size: AVIF compresses very well, so the JPG is usually larger. Each card shows the size before and after.

Examples

Original Setting Result
product.avif (180 KB) JPG at 90 product.jpg, usually larger; the card shows both sizes
sticker.avif (transparent) PNG, keep transparency sticker.png with a transparent background
sticker.avif (transparent) JPG, white background sticker.jpg, white where it was transparent
20 files JPG 20 conversions, one ZIP download

To go the other way and shrink JPGs, use JPG to AVIF. For GIF, BMP, ICO and other formats, use the image converter.

FAQ

Why won't my AVIF file open?

AVIF is a fairly new format (2019), so older photo viewers, office apps and many upload forms do not accept it yet. A JPG opens almost everywhere.

Should I choose JPG or PNG?

JPG is smaller for photos. For logos, stickers or images with text or transparent areas, PNG keeps the transparency and crisp edges. Converting to JPG fills transparent areas with the background color, white by default.

Do I lose quality?

The decoded picture is saved as JPG at quality 90, where differences are usually hard to see. Raise the quality slider for sharper, larger files. PNG output is lossless.

What if my browser does not support AVIF?

Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari 16.4 or later open AVIF themselves. Older browsers download a built-in AVIF decoder (about 1.2 MB) to read the file, and the result card says so.

Are my files uploaded?

No. Decoding and saving happen in your browser, and the decoder is served from this site.
