Typing Speed Test — WPM and Accuracy
A typing speed test with net WPM, accuracy and clear scoring rules

Text to type
Start typing in the box to begin. Pasting is disabled.
Five characters (spaces included) make one word. Only correctly typed characters are counted, and the total is converted to words per minute (WPM).
Accuracy is worked out when the test ends, by comparing what is in the box with the text character by character at the same position. A typo you fixed with Backspace is not in the final text, so it does not count against you, but skipping one character shifts everything after it by one place, so the rest shows as wrong.
What you type is not stored or sent to a server. Only your best and recent speeds stay in this browser so you can compare next time (Clear records removes them).
What it is
Typing Speed Test shows a passage and measures how fast and how accurately you copy it. Choose 60 seconds, 120 seconds, or a short text of three sentences. The practice sentences were written for this site and the order is shuffled each time, so you cannot rely on memory. Pasting and dropping text are blocked so the score reflects real typing. Korean visitors also get a Korean mode that counts keystrokes per jamo, but the English scoring below is all you need on this page.
How to use
- Pick a mode. Sixty seconds is the usual quick check, and 120 seconds smooths out a slow start.
- Click the input box and type the passage shown above it. The clock starts at your first character.
- Correct characters turn dark and mistakes get a red underline. You can fix a mistake with Backspace and keep going.
- When time runs out, or when you finish the text, the results appear. Press Enter or the Finish button to end early with what you have typed.
- Choose Try again with new text for a fresh shuffle of sentences.
How it works
- Net WPM: correctly typed characters divided by five, divided by the elapsed minutes. Spaces and punctuation count as characters.
- Gross WPM: all characters typed divided by five and by the minutes, so it ignores mistakes. The gap between the two shows how much errors cost you.
- Accuracy: correct characters divided by characters typed, shown as a percentage with one decimal.
- Position matching: your final text is compared with the passage one character at a time. One missing letter shifts everything after it, so delete back to the mistake instead of typing on.
- Timing: measured with the browser’s high-resolution clock from your first input. A run shorter than one second is scored as one second so a lucky start cannot give a silly number.
- Passages: ordinary prose with capitals, commas and periods, built from 3 to 26 sentences depending on the mode, enough that even a very fast typist will not run out.
Examples
| Situation | Net WPM | Accuracy |
|---|---|---|
| 300 correct characters in 60 s | 60 | 100% |
| 300 typed with 10 wrong, 60 s | 58 | 96.7% |
| 150 correct characters in 30 s | 60 | 100% |
| 600 correct characters in 120 s | 60 | 100% |
The gross WPM in the second row is still 60, because gross speed counts every character you typed.
FAQ
How is WPM calculated here?
WPM means words per minute. Because English words vary in length, five characters, spaces included, count as one word. The tool counts only the characters you typed correctly at the right position, divides by five, and scales to one minute. A gross figure that ignores errors is shown next to it.
Why is my score different from other typing tests?
Tests disagree on how to treat mistakes, when the clock starts, and whether corrected errors still count against you. This tool scores the final text, so an error you fixed with Backspace costs nothing, while an error left in the text lowers both accuracy and net speed. The exact rules are listed below.
Does accuracy count errors I corrected?
No. Accuracy is the share of characters in your final text that match the target at the same position. If you want a strict score, avoid using Backspace and watch the gross speed too.
When does the timer start and stop?
It starts with your first typed character, not when the page loads. In 60 and 120 second modes it stops when time runs out. In short text mode it stops when your text matches the whole passage, when you press Enter, or when you press Finish.
Is my result saved anywhere?
Nothing is sent to a server. Timing and scoring happen in your browser and the text you type is not kept. So you can compare with last time, only the speed figures of runs of ten characters or more (your best and the last five) stay in this browser; Clear records deletes them.
