Add names and press "Make teams".

The link holds only the name list above, not the teams, so everyone who opens it can split on their own.

What it is

A quick way to divide people into teams for sports days, workshop breakouts, group projects, study groups or game nights. Enter the names, choose either a number of teams or a team size, and the tool splits them at random. You can keep friends together, or keep people who would otherwise dominate (or who were just paired last time) on different teams. Results appear as one card per team and can be copied as text for a group chat. Names are processed in your browser and never sent anywhere.

How to use

  1. Put the names in the list, one per line or separated by commas.
  2. Choose Number of teams or People per team and enter the number.
  3. If you need rules, write groups such as Mia, Liam in “Keep on the same team” and in “Keep on different teams”, one group per line.
  4. Press Make teams. Not happy with the draw? Press Shuffle again.
  5. Use Copy result to get lines like Team 1: Mia, Liam for pasting.

How it works

  • Team sizes: the base size is people divided by teams, rounded down, and as many teams as the remainder get one more person. Which teams those are is random.
  • People per team: the number of teams is rounded up (10 people at 4 per team gives 3 teams), then sizes are balanced as above. Both numbers must be whole numbers from 1 up to the number of people.
  • Together rules: overlapping groups are merged. “Mia, Liam” plus “Liam, Noah” makes one block of three. If a block is larger than any team, you are told it cannot fit.
  • Apart rules: every pair inside a group is placed on different teams. If this contradicts a together rule you are told which two people clash.
  • When it is impossible: for ordinary group sizes the tool checks every possible layout before it declares that none exists. If the rules are so tangled that the search runs out of time, it reports that separately.
  • Names: duplicate names cannot be used in rules, and Hangul typed in different Unicode forms counts as the same name.

Examples

People Setting Team sizes
10 3 teams 4, 3, 3
10 4 per team 4, 3, 3 (3 teams)
12 4 per team 4, 4, 4
7 2 teams 4, 3
6 3 teams, “Noah, Emma” apart 2, 2, 2 (Noah and Emma split)

FAQ

What happens when the group does not divide evenly?

Team sizes never differ by more than one person. Ten people in three teams become 4, 3 and 3, and which team gets the extra person is random. Splitting by team size works the same way, so ten people at 4 per team means three teams of 4, 3 and 3.

How do I write the together and apart rules?

One group per line, names separated by commas. Writing "Mia, Liam" in the together box guarantees those two share a team; writing "Noah, Emma, Ava" in the apart box puts all three on different teams. Names in a rule must match the name list exactly.

What if no team layout meets the rules?

The tool does not fudge it. If three people must be on different teams but you asked for two teams, it says no layout satisfies the rules; if a together group is bigger than a team it says so. Add teams or remove a rule to fix it.

Is the shuffle fair?

With no rules, everyone is shuffled once with the browser's cryptographic random numbers and dealt into the team sizes. With rules, valid layouts are searched in random order, so you get as much variety as the rules allow. Press Shuffle again for a fresh split.

Can I share the name list?

The "Create a link to this name list" button puts only the names after the # in the address (never sent to a server, but visible to whoever gets the link), never the teams, so whoever opens it can split on their own. The address is not changed until you press the button, so skip it if the names are private.
