Edit PDF document information (title, author, keywords, dates) or remove all metadata

Add one PDF (up to 100 MB). Adding another file replaces the current one. Files never leave your browser.

What it does

Apart from its pages, a PDF stores document properties. Search engines and document managers read the title and keywords, and viewers may show the title in the window bar. On the other hand, a work computer’s user name or the name of the application that made the original can end up in Author or Creator and reveal more than intended. This tool reads those properties, lets you change them, or removes them all, and saves a new PDF without touching the pages.

How to use

  1. Drop one PDF on the box or press Choose PDF. The current values fill the fields.
  2. Edit the title, author, subject, keywords, creator and producer. An empty field removes that entry.
  3. Pick the created and modified dates from the calendar or press Now. Leave them empty to remove them.
  4. Press Save changes, or Remove all properties and save to strip everything.
  5. Restore the original values puts the loaded values back if you made a mistake.

How it works

  • Where values go: the document information dictionary of ISO 32000 (the trailer’s Info) with Title, Author, Subject, Keywords, Creator, Producer, CreationDate and ModDate. Text is a UTF-16 string; dates use the D:YYYYMMDDHHmmSSZ format in UTC.
  • Time zone: the date fields show this device’s time zone and are converted to UTC when saving.
  • Nothing else changes: opening and saving does not rewrite the producer or the modification date by itself. Only the fields you edit and the XMP packet change.
  • Custom entries: extra entries such as Company stay on a normal save and are removed with “Remove all”.
  • Limit: 2,000 characters per field.
  • Library: pdf-lib (MIT).

FAQ

What metadata does a PDF contain?

The document properties show title, author, subject, keywords, creator (the application), producer (the PDF converter) and the creation and modification dates. Word processors often fill in the computer's user name as the author, so check it before sending a file out. Custom entries such as Company are listed too.

What does “Remove all properties and save” remove?

Every entry of the document information dictionary (Info) and the XMP metadata attached to the document and its pages. The data objects are taken out of the file, not just unlinked, and on saving every object nothing refers to any more (including old versions left by earlier incremental saves) is dropped, so no hidden copy of the old values remains. Pages, fonts, forms and everything else stay as they are.

Why is XMP removed when I only edit values?

XMP repeats the old title and author, and some viewers such as Adobe Acrobat may show those instead of your edits. So XMP is removed on save and only the information dictionary is kept. The PDF/A marker lives in XMP, so a PDF/A file loses that marker.

Can I use Korean or emoji in the title?

Yes. Values are stored as Unicode (UTF-16) PDF strings, so Korean, Chinese and emoji show correctly in the properties window.

Can I edit a password-protected PDF?

PDFs that need a password to open, or that have editing restrictions, cannot be changed. Upload a copy with the restrictions removed.
