Photo Filters — B&W, Sepia, Brightness, Contrast
Browser photo filter with presets and sliders for brightness, contrast, saturation and blur
Runs in your browser · nothing is uploaded
Drop the photo to filter here
One JPG, PNG or WebP file up to 50 MB. You can also paste a copied image with Ctrl+V (⌘V on a Mac). Nothing leaves your browser.
Fine-tune
A share of the photo's shorter edge, so large photos blur the same way.
Saved at the original resolution in the original format (JPG and WebP at quality 92); the name gets -filtered added. With blur, large photos can take a few seconds.
The picture is redrawn, so the original EXIF data (camera, time, GPS location) is not carried over; the photo's rotation is applied. Nothing is uploaded.
What it is
A quick way to change the mood of a photo. One-tap looks such as black & white, sepia, vintage, vivid, soft and invert give you a starting point, and sliders for brightness, contrast, saturation, grayscale, sepia, invert and blur let you fine-tune it. A compare slider shows the original next to the result, and the final photo is saved at full resolution.
How to use
- Drop a photo on the dashed area or press Choose a photo.
- Pick a Quick look such as Black & white, Sepia or Vintage.
- Fine-tune with the sliders. Reset all takes you back to the original.
- Use the Compare slider to see the original and the result side by side.
- Press Save photo; it keeps the original format.
How it works
- Order: brightness, contrast, saturation, grayscale, sepia and invert are combined into one colour matrix in that order.
- Brightness multiplies each channel: at 150% a value of 100 becomes 150.
- Contrast stretches or squeezes values around the middle (127.5).
- Grayscale, sepia and saturation use the formulas of the W3C Filter Effects specification. Full grayscale turns pure red (255, 0, 0) into grey 54.
- Blur is a box blur applied three times, a standard approximation of a Gaussian blur. Its strength is a share of the shorter edge, so photos of any size blur alike.
- Saving keeps the format (JPEG and WebP at quality 92) and adds
-filteredto the name; the original EXIF data is not carried over.
Examples
| Quick look | Values |
|---|---|
| Black & white | grayscale 100%, contrast 110% |
| Sepia | sepia 100% |
| Vintage | sepia 40%, contrast 110%, saturation 80%, brightness 105% |
| Vivid | saturation 140%, contrast 110% |
| Soft | blur 0.5%, brightness 105%, contrast 95% |
To put a caption on the result use add text to image; to read the exact colour of a spot use the image color picker.
FAQ
How is this different from a phone app filter?
There is nothing to install, it works in any browser on a computer or phone, and the photo is never uploaded. The grayscale, sepia and saturation formulas are the ones in the W3C Filter Effects specification, so the same values give the same result on every device.
How do I compare with the original?
Move the Compare slider under the preview; the left side shows the original and the right side the filtered photo. At 0% the whole preview is filtered.
Does saving reduce quality?
The photo is saved at its original resolution, PNG without loss and JPEG and WebP at quality 92. The preview is computed on a smaller copy for speed, but saving applies the same values to the full-size picture.
Saving takes a while with blur.
Blur works over every pixel several times, so photos above about 20 megapixels can take a few seconds. Wait while the button shows Working…; colour-only changes finish almost instantly.
Is my photo uploaded?
No. The filters are calculated and the file is saved in your browser.
